U.S. Forces Kill Osama bin Laden

Osama bin Laden, the world’s most wanted terrorist, was killed by U.S. forces in Pakistan on May 2, Pakistan time. U.S. President Barack Obama made the official announcement in a speech on Sunday night.

The leader of the terrorist group Al Qaeda was cornered at a compound in Abbottabad. The town is about 35 miles north of Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital.

About two dozen U.S. Navy SEALs swept into the hideout by helicopter early Monday morning, Pakistan time. The military operation took about 40 minutes. Bin Laden was shot as he and his bodyguards opened fire on the U.S. troops. Three men, including one of bin Laden’s sons, and one woman were also killed in the raid. There were no U.S. deaths.

“Justice has been done,” Obama said late Sunday night from the White House.

The hunt for bin Laden began nearly a decade ago. As the mastermind behind the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, bin Laden is responsible for the deaths of nearly 3,000 people in that one event.

American forces spent years looking for the Al Qaeda leader. Much of the time he was thought to be hidden in caves in Afghanistan or across the border in Pakistan. Earlier this year, government officials began to zero in on the Abbottabad compound in Pakistan. The million-dollar home was built in 2005, according to intelligence tips. The compound was surrounded by 18-foot-tall walls topped by barbed wire, officials say. The home had no phone or Internet connection.

Bin Laden was quickly buried at sea after he was killed. “We have rid the world of the most infamous terrorist of our time,” said Leon Panetta, director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Panetta was in charge of the military team that killed bin Laden.

Upon hearing the news of bin Laden’s death, hundreds of people took to the streets at Ground Zero, where the September 11 attacks took place in New York City. Others gathered outside the gates of the White House in Washington, D.C., cheering and waving American flags.

“We’ve been waiting a long time for this day,” said New Yorker Lisa Ramaci.

OK, i change my answer he was a terrible person, he killed many people but i still sorta kinds somewhat agree with abby because in a way we did start it. I really don't thinks its right to celebrate someones death, terrible person or not. And bob i live in this country, why would i not respect it?
