WEEKLY READER CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Editor
Editor -Weekly Reader Corporation, one of the country's leading publishers of classroom periodicals and educational materials, seeks an editor for its award-winning periodical, Writing. This 24-page secondary school magazine aims to excite young people about the power of good writing. The editor will work with the managing editor and art director in planning, writing, and editing six yearly issues of Writing plus teacher's guide.

Responsibilities include:
  • Generating and developing exciting story ideas and teaching strategies that are appropriate and interesting to middle school and high school audience. Researching and writing content.
  • Collaborating with authors and freelance writers. Procuring permissions to reprint published material.
  • Create an 8-page teacher's guide to accompany each issue, including background information, suggested classroom extension activities, teacher resources, and reproducible skills masters.
  • Editing text in Microsoft Word and Quark XPress.


Special Skills Necessary:
Must be an excellent writer and voracious reader. Must be able to communicate complex issues in lively, clear, and concise prose. Expertise in writing methodology and pedagogy necessary, as well as the ability to present material in a kid-friendly fashion. Must be able to work quickly and meet short deadlines. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Quark XPress important. Respect for and appreciation of children and teens required.

Minimum Education/Experience Required:
Undergraduate degree in writing/journalism/English/education or related fields. Minimum 3-4 years in publishing/writing/editing/journalism. Background in education (particularly English/language arts/writing) a strong plus. Experience with teenagers also a plus.

Web Programmer
Description:
Incumbent Reports To: Director of Web Development

Department: Marketing—Web/New Media

Position Summary:
As the Web Programmer, you will be responsible for the maintenance of all Web applications on the Weekly Reader Website. In addition, the Web programmer will build Web applications from start to finish under the guidance of his or her direct supervisor.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
    Hands on ASP.NET developer for the WeeklyReader.com Website. The perfect candidate will possess:
  • Ability to work on projects throughout the software development life cycle
  • Support and maintain existing Website code including ecommerce engine and CMS
  • Write and prepare code requirements documentation
  • Contribute ideas to improve the existing site
Technical Skills (Must be proficient with the following technologies):
  • C#.NET and VB.NET
  • JavaScript, HTML and CSS
  • Knowledge of transactional web systems
  • T-SQL and complete familiarity with SQL Server 2000
  • Understanding of ecommerce and other large scale, complex programming projects.
  • Experience with ecommerce Websites is required. Must have a proven track record of producing high quality ASP.NET Web projects from start to finish. Experience or knowledge of XML a plus.

Production Designer
Description:
Incumbent Reports To: Promotion Department Manager

Department: Marketing

Position Summary:
Incorporate revisions into existing creative materials and prepare files for release to printer. Make recommendations, where appropriate, for improving visual appeal of those projects. Work closely with Copywriter and Marketing team members, as well as Divisional Project Managers, to create designs for various other marketing materials, as needed.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Incorporate updates and revisions into existing designs
  • Work closely with Promotion Department Manager and Project Managers to ensure that all revised creative meets strategies and deadlines
  • Prepare layouts for review and approval
  • Meet production schedules and follow digital workflow procedures
  • Prepare scans and coordinate retouching as needed

  • Maintain accurate archives of all materials
  • Upload new/revised digital product images onto web site
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Create and execute design concepts for various other projects

Associate Art Director (News Group)
Description: Weekly Reader, a leading educational publisher located in Pleasantville, NY, seeks an Associate Art Director for one of its school magazines. The Associate Art Director is responsible for the creative development and execution of one of our Elementary periodicals. They will work closely with other members of the creative team including Editors, Photo, Production and Manufacturing.

Senior Editor
Incumbent Reports To: Editorial Director

Position Summary:
Responsible for the editorial management of a portion of the titles in each publishing season's list of supplemental educational products; supervises work of freelance writers and copyeditors; performs hands-on editing; assists the Editorial Director in planning and scheduling the flow of editorial work through the Department. Works in collaboration with the Creative Director to manage the design and art/photo program for projects. Must keep current with curriculum and education market trends to serve teachers and student with innovative products across a range of grade levels and curriculum areas.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Working with the Editorial Director, SVP/Publisher and Sales & Marketing, generate plans, schedules, and product ideas for the school publishing program
  • Serve as the supervisory editor for a portion of the series in each publishing season's publishing list; liaison with Art/Design and Production, and with other publishers and vendors as needed, on such projects

Creative (Art) Director
Incumbent Reports To: SVP/Publisher

Position Summary:
Manage the design, layout and illustration of books (including cover designs) and other components in the school and library publishing program. Establish design standards that maximize market appeal while remaining pedagogically appropriate, supervise other designers and photo researchers in the Department, and perform hands-on design and layout for selected projects. Participate in budgeting projects and in planning and scheduling project work flow through the Department; liaison with GSI Senior Managing Editor, School Publishing Editorial Director, and Production Director to ensure on-time publication of all projects within budget and meeting established standards; assist in recruiting design staff; participate in evaluating and selecting new titles.

Editor
INCUMBENT REPORTS TO: Managing Editor

POSITION SUMMARY: The editor plans and implements Lifetime Learning Systems programs, from conception to post-delivery services. The editor also serves as a client liaison, a fact-checker/proofreader, and a project manager.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform variety of creative, logistical and research tasks for clients.
  • Manage, write, and edit Lifetime Learning Systems projects from concept to post-delivery services (i.e., contests).

Lifetime Learning Systems, founded in 1978, was the first company to create sponsored educational materials that are printed and distributed free to teachers, as well as senior centers. Our clients include major corporations, trade associations, not-for-profits, and government agencies. We create and design educator guides, student activities, posters, and videos covering a range of topics that are designed to supplement classroom curriculum.
