SPEAK OUT

Welcome to Grade 3 You Decide

Weekly Reader Grade 3

Earth Day is here, and my school is going to help with a recycling project. My friend Jeffrey says recycling is a waste of time. How can I convince him that recycling helps the planet?

Dear Weekly Reader,

Tell him if you recycle bottles, papers, and cans, we won’t have to cut down as many trees. We can reuse the plastic and other materials to make other things. It helps Earth breathe if you recycle, and it keeps garbage from going into landfills, oceans, and lakes.

-Gabe
Dear Weekly Reader,

We believe that if Jeffrey could see what NOT recycling does, he may choose to recycle. We could take him to a landfill, a junkyard, or even a polluted lake or stream to show him how not recycling hurts the environment.

-Hazel Green Elementary School third graders in Kentucky
Dear Weekly Reader,

Let him know how recycling helps our planet and our world.

-Jaden and Gabrielle
Dear Weekly Reader,

I would make a poster and show him what the earth would look like without recycling

-Kathy
Dear Weekly Reader,

To convince your friend Jeffery to recycle, you should tell him reasons why he should recycle, like how he can save trees from being cut down and how he can save animals in the rain forest. Maybe Jeffery will make the right decision to recycle!

-Camryn
Dear Weekly Reader,

When Jeffrey said, “Recycling is a waste of time,” it isn’t really a waste of time because you can reuse recycled things again and again. When Jeffrey threw his soda can into the garbage-only trashcan, it was a bad choice because you cannot use it again. Recycling helps the environment.

-Austin
Dear Weekly Reader,

Recycling is good because it saves our planet. If Jeffrey doesn’t want to recycle, the recyclable materials he throws out will be absorbed into the soil. Recycling is fun. Make a game out of it by seeing how fast you can recycle, or who can recycle the most material in a minute. See if Jeffrey can beat his previous scores.
