Yesterday was Sesame Street's birthday! In honor of 36 years of groundbreaking children's programming, we give you some of our favorite characters from the show! Who's your favorite Sesame Street character? Let us know who and why and we'll post your writings here!

Big Bird

When you're a kid, the thought of an 8 foot 2 inch bird can be a scary one. Think dinosaur on the loose. But add a splash of canary yellow, a curious nature, large innocent eyes, and a spirit of adventure to the mix and what do you end up with? A huggable, kindred spirit. That's what Big Bird was to me. An immense yellow birdie who saw the world through my eyes—and spoke to me. He could do all the things I wanted to do—write poetry, draw, ride a unicyle, ice skate, roller skate, dance, sing … and he was only 6 years old!!! But he never seemed out of reach—he told me it was OK to make mistakes, to be yourself, and to not have all the answers to life. He reminded me that "Asking is a good way of finding things out!" Come to think of it, I guess Big Bird’s larger-than-life yellow frame still speaks to me.

Even though I didn't really grow up with Big Bird and SS, I wouldn't mind checking him out now. Seems like a relatable character, even for adults. Up to now, I make loads of mistakes and have lots of unanaswered questions, and it's reassuring to know that that's all part of what makes me alive.

One of my favorite shows when I was little was Sesame Street. I remember coming home from school and turning on the television just in time to hear “Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?” For the next thirty minutes or so, my eyes would be fixed on the television.
I loved to watch the characters and how they solved their problems. I remember how Oscar was always grouchy and how Cookie Monster always ate cookies. However, my favorite character when I was younger was Elmo. I always liked Elmo because he was my favorite color, red. However, as I became older Elmo still remained special to me not because he was red, but for more important reasons such as; the ability to solve problems, keeping and making new friends, and most of all being kind to everyone. Elmo taught me many life lessons I use today, and because of that he is my favorite Sesame Street character.

My favorite Sesame Street character is Ernie. He has always been my favorite because he was always cheering people up, singing songs, or trying to help little kids learn their A,B,Cs and their 1-2-3s. I remember when I was little and would always watch the show I couldn't wait until Ernie would show up. Every day my parents would take me over to my grandmas and I would always get there right as the show was starting. As I got older I stopped watching the show as much but it was now my little cousin's favorite show and his favorite character was also Ernie. I asked him why Ernie was his favorite character and he said the same reasons I
did but in a 5 years old language.

Since I was a little girl I have always liked Grover. He has always been lovable, cute, and blue just like he describes himself. When I grow up I would like to travel all of the countries. What I like about Grover is that he gives a tour about different cities in different countries. All of the places he visits are so interesting.

Another thing that sparks my interest about Grover is that he calls himself Super Grover. The funny thing about this is that he thinks that he is super and has all of these super abilities but everyone knows that
he doesn't. For example I was watching Sesame Street the other day and Grover said he was going to fly up to the top of the tree but the girl told him he can try, really she didn't believe in him. I am glad that
Grover believes in himself that he can fly because it is a good thing for kids to believe in themselves or in the things that they do. It's not good for the kids to think that they can fly but you get my point.

There are many other things that make me smile when Grover comes on, but I think this is the most important. Grover just makes all of the things
that he teaches fun. For example once I was watching this show and Grover was teaching the kids there colors but also how to eat healthy foods. He had four boxes with four different colors on each box. The colors were
red, orange, yellow, and green. There was also four pieces of fruits or vegetables. He had to put the right color of fruit or vegetable in the right colored box. I think if I was three or four again I would
understand what to eat right and I would get to learn my colors.

Grover has always been my favorite character I asked my mom what Grover was like when she was little, she said that he had not changed at all. I am glad Grover has always been and always will be Grover!

My favorite Sesame character growing up and even now would have to be Elmo. I don't know where the show would be without him, I mean the only other one that is the basis of the show is Big Bird. Elmo is red, funny
and just and over all fun person to watch. Through him I learned my abcs and my 123's. When I was younger I had every dancing Elmo, even the chicken dance. I haven't seen the show in years but I would love to see
what they do now. I'm sure that it has changed a lot from the days when I used to watch it.

I loved the red fuzzy character Elmo. I felt like I could always relate to him in so many ways. For example he wasn't perfect. So i didn't feel a need to be just like Big Bird or those other characters who taught
lessons. He always leaned from his mistake and became smarter as the show went on just like a real person. Not only was he a friend to me he was also a teacher after he learned his ABC's or 123's he taught them to all of his freinds. He was hardly ever greedy nor mean to his friends. when he was he learend his lesson and improved the next time.I was amazed on how nice and sweet ne was to everyone around him. this is why i love Elmo and never want him to change. I hope the show stays on television to help other kids to learn their ABC'S and 123's just like it did for me.

Sesame Street is a very influential show on the show PBS. it has been an inspiration for 36 years and for probably 36 more years. But for me, Elmo was always my favorite.

Elmo was my favorite because he the Sesame creators made him red and red is a color that makes me feel excited and joyful. It brightens my day up a notch.
Also, he was always in a good mood which seemed to put me in a good mood also. Not only was he fun and entertaining, he taugh kids general lessons on how to share, be nice to others, and he taught kids the alphabet. He probably taught many more lessons but there is too much to name. Elmo has affected me today with his influential shows. He even has a new show. I'm not sure what it's called, but i guess he's flying solo
now(haha). And even that show is very powerful in ways that help kids become better and more nice and enjoyable. Overall, Elmo was a great character that influenced and made kids happy, such as me, over the years.
