Space Frog
- Story by Megan Vincent, 8th Grade
Once upon a time during a beautiful day in the town of Hoppers Ville, Froggy McFrogger was busy working in his science laboratory. He planned to be the first frog to hop on the moon. Everybody that knew him thought that he was crazy. His girlfriend, Felicity Frog was the only frog that had some faith in him.
That night was windy and cloudy. Froggy had not left his lab since that morning because he was sure that he was about to make a scientific breakthrough. He kept mixing different chemicals with different types of food. His goal was to make some sort of chemically advanced food that could automatically bring you to space. Suddenly he got a great idea. Maybe I could mix hydrogen with jellybean mixture in order to make jumping beans, Froggy said to himself. He looked in all of his cabinets and drawers, but he couldn't find any of the ingredients he needed to make jellybeans. He called Felicity and asked her if she wanted to go to the market with him.
When they arrived at the Supermarket, people noticed Froggy and pointed and whispered. Froggy was used to this kind of behavior from other frogs because he was different and it's hard to understand frogs that are different from you. When they gathered up all of the ingredients, they bought their items and went back to Froggy's lab. There, he mixed together all of the ingredients and added the crucial chemical: hydrogen. He placed the mixture in the oven at 450 degrees and waited for 20 minutes. When the timer rang, he placed the jellybeans in cooling trays and placed them in his freezer. Then he placed opened his skylight and was ready for the test.
Once the jellybeans were nice and hard, he placed one in his mouth, but nothing happened so he ate another one. Right away, he began to shake and jump violently. He was going sideways, backwards, and forwards. The only direction he wasn't going was up. Thinking about this, he hopped as high as he had ever hopped before, and landed on the roof of his house. There, he ate another jellybean, and took another giant hop and ended up on the top of the highest tree in Hoppers Ville. He was so excited, that he ate his fifth jellybean and began to float up beyond the trees and into the clouds. (He figured that this was what happened when the hydrogen builds up and wants to escape.) Then, he saw it. Froggy saw the moon! He was so close to it that it seemed that he could taste it.
When he was high enough, he took one last leap and landed on the moon! He looked all around him and was in awe. He couldn't believe the view. When he looked closely, he could see Hoppers Ville. He went to explore and found a single tree. It had only one branch and a few leaves. This, he decided, was where he was going to make his new home. He picked a leaf off of the tree and laid it out like a bed. Then, he placed it under the thickest part of the branch, in order to protect himself from whatever hazardous weather situations could take place.
On the last day of the month, he began to feel homesick and decided that his adventure must come to a close. He went to the tree and placed his prints on the ground beneath it, so there would always be a mark of the first frog on the moon. Then he hopped on his branch, took in the views for the last time. He placed himself on the highest leaf, and slid all the way home thinking about his next adventure on the moon.
