Today is Talk Like a Pirate Day! Invented in 1995 by two friends, John Baur and Mark Summers, this day celebrates “the spirit of adventure and the human need to engage in the act of discovery.” It also provides a painless way of expanding your vocabulary. Aye, really!

Here are a few handy expressions you may want to use today:

If you want to agree with someone: Aye!

In other words: Yes.

If you want to say hello to your buddy: Ahoy matey!

In other words: Yo!

If you are trying to get the attention of a group of people: Avast ye!

In other words: Listen up!

If you are trying to get someone to do something immediately: All hands on deck.

In other words: Hop to it!

In other words: No way!

If you are happy: Arr, this is life Gar!

In other words: This rocks!

If you want to describe someone who is a scoundrel or rascal:
He’s a ne’er-do-well.

In other words: He’s a troublemaker.

If you are getting ready to leave a place: Anchor!

In other words: Let’s get out of here.

If you want to take a nap or a short rest: Let’s take a caulk.

In other words: Let’s {take a} break.

You don’t have to put on an eye patch or swashbuckler boots to celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day. Just grab a copy of Treasure Island or watch a pirate movie like Pirates of the Caribbean or The Princess Bride and come up with your own list of pirate phrases.

I do not think it would work if there's a whole day for people to talk in a way they no nothing of, except for the people who enjoy talking like that.

I thought this one was not that great beacause if someone wants to talk like a pirate they should do it. They dont need a holiday.

Pirate vs. Cowboy. What an interesting match up! Hmm... I guess I would say that it would have to depend on the location of the fight. If it was in some ghost town saloon, I'd put my money on the cowboy. If it was on the high seas, the pirate. Of course, if they met in some neutral place like Epcot Center, your guess is as good as mine.
