Here are a few more student written birthday poems inspired by Billy Collins' On Turning Ten and READ magazine!
Olderby Iman Siddiqui
The whole idea of it makes me feelLike a rotten old banana peelEveryday and every nightHolding on to my child-ish rightSometimes I want to be aloneWith everything silent to the boneNo matter how I feel insideThere is a hole open wideEverything is changedAnd I'm the one to blameSometimes the change is goodJust like it always shouldEverything is crazyNow it has become hazyI can't take it anymoreAll that knocking on my doorI'm sick and tired of all these trapsClosing on my weakened backOlder and older, day by dayNo more time to go out and playAs I've matured, bigger and strongerIt will stay for longer and longerEven if I cannot go out and playHopefully I'll enjoy my 13th birthday
----------Turning 13by Christine Leong - Grade 6
The whole idea of it makes me feelLike the shriveled old grape on 42nd streetThe idea of 13 creeping up on me Is slow but consistent Week by week, day by dayHour by hour, minute by, minutesecond by secondIt's like the lioness About to pouce on her preyIt is like an ocean Full of "Happy 13th Birthdays"Swarming around meTrying to drown meYou might wonder why?Why are you afraid? But, I'd simply answerThey expect so much moreThey expect you to be greatThey pile work on your head 'Till you can't balance any longerThen they pile more work And you drop like a bombYou see, turning 13 isn't all that badBut it's the door to independenceThe door to freedom, high schoolCollege, your job, adulthoodBeing me of course, I would never want toThink of all thisSo right now I'll justSit back and relax andConcentrate on, not being 13,But being 12.
Don't ask me why we're posting another birthday monkey picture. I don't have the answer. He just looks so happy! Oh... I guess that is answer enough.
