Editor's note - Recent news has come out that states that this man is not the man in the famous photo. More to come in a future blog post.

Do you know this man?

Sure you do! His name is Carl Muscarello. Carl was the sailor in 1945 who celebrated VJ Day by planting one on a nurse named Edith Shain in the middle of Times Square. The photo, taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt became an instant classic when Life Magazine published it.

That was over 60 years ago. Today, Carl is 80 years old, but he's still as full of energy as he was back then!

Recently, two men broke into Carl's Florida home. One of the burglars ran away while the other one started swinging a golf club at Carl's son. Carl grabbed the intruder and put a chokehold on him. He then brought the man to the floor and held him down until the police came.

"I often happen to be at a strange place at a strange time," Muscarello said.

Once a hero, always a hero.

I think that this is a realy cool story. I also love the picture (I want it as my screen saver). Refering to Zaire's comment i gree that the ending could have been more detailed.

I also agree with the two previous people that there was not enough detail. However, i enjoyed the topic and the picture.

The sailor's identity is actually disputed. I read in the news today that a forensic scientist proved it was another man, named Glenn McDuffie.

This man is not the "Kissing Sailor," however heroic he may be. He was forensically eliminated as a possible candidate by Houston Police Department forensic artist Lois Gibson. Gibson verified retired veteran Glenn McDuffie as the Sailor using scientific forensic analysis.

edith isn't the nurse, that was a false claim. that guy isn't the guy in the picture either. he's also been proven wrong. the photographer never identified his subjects and he passed away in 1995. read more---> http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070803/ap_on_re_us/kissing_sailor
