- Poem by Kat Lucas, Grade 10
I was once lost amidst the bramblesmy only shelter—the heat of the jungle
my úarîraonce ran among the elephantsmy hair a wild mass of tanglesdangling over a dirt-smeared faceriding on the backs of myfriends, i abused my body
my manasaclouded by the tendrils ofmist that weave their way through the branches oftwisted tresssplashing around the cool waterI could not comprehend the meaning of kala
my jîvacould not express howaloneI felt as the elephants slept peacefully, I pleaded to the stars, let my spirit fly! let me glide among the clouds and be free of the boa constricting my soul!
my cry was answered—kala found me
out of the jungle family camebearing dayâ. gently theyspoke with me and my soul soared on thewings of the heron
together we are one, our spirits bound by thepower of the stars
