Wildfires that raged for two weeks across Southern California destroyed more than 2,000 homes. The Santa Ana winds finally calmed down enough to let firefighters get most of the blazes contained, but the winds could pick up again. Prosecutors in Southern California decided not to charge a boy with arson for starting one of the wildfires. The boy told authorities he was playing with matches near his Santa Clarita home when the fire began. His home wasn’t damaged, but 21 other houses burned in that blaze. Prosecutors said they found no evidence that the boy had intended to cause damage. Read more about the case.
Health departments across the country are trying to teach schools how to keep their students safe from staph infections without starting a panic. Much of their advice comes down to hygiene: Wash your hands to avoid spreading the germs, cover up cuts and lesions that could become infected or be infected, and remind children to keep their hands away from their mouths and noses, two portals for germs.
