Welcome to Current Events!

“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.
The important thing is not to stop questioning.”—Albert Einstein

The world events of today shape our future in every way, from how well we understand one another to how healthy we keep our planet. Current Events gathers the most important and unique news stories into a magazine written and designed for students. Our readers don't just learn facts, they learn to think critically about the influences within their world and about their own responsibilities to make this a better world for everyone.

On this site you'll find story updates, additional resources, including Smart Stuff quizzes, and links to CE’s News Blog for students. Be sure to check back each issue!

Issue 2 News Updates

  • Following the Republican National Convention, GOP presidential candidate John McCain received a big bounce in the public opinion polls. Prior to the Sept. 1-4 convention, most major polls showed Obama with a six-point lead over McCain. Not any more! A CNN poll on Sept. 10 found McCain leading Obama 46 percent to 45 percent. A Sept. 11 Gallup poll showed a wider gap, with McCain receiving 48 percent to Obama’s 44 percent. Ask students: What might be some reasons for the increase?

  • The candidates have spent their post-convention days crisscrossing the country to woo swing voters in the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, and Michigan, among others. On Sept. 11, McCain and Obama set aside politics and made a rare join appearance at the World Trade Center site in New York. They shook hands with firefighters and relatives of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, but neither spoke publicly during the appearance at ground zero.
