Welcome to Current Health 1!
Dear Educators,
Americans certainly love their pets—there are currently 60 million dogs and 70 million cats living in U.S. homes! Our March issue covers the health benefits of having animals (whether they're big or small, furry or scaly) in your life. Studies have found that pets offer kids the following positive effects (amongst many others!):
· Less stress
· Higher self-esteem
· Lower levels of fear
· Less loneliness
You’ll find more information on animals and health inside this special edition. Additionally, we cover ways to handle hay fever, how to deal with sibling competition, and why organic food is so popular.
Be sure to tell us what you and your students think of this issue.

Contest!
Teachers, encourage your 5th and 6th graders to “Fight the Bite”—they might just win $1,000!
Mosquitoes and ticks may cause more than itchy bug bites. They can also spread diseases such as West Nile virus. That’s why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Weekly Reader are sponsoring a contest where students make posters describing how to prevent mosquito-borne diseases. Go to www.weeklyreader.com/fightthebite to enter before March 15th.
Be sure to check out the March exercises for Current Health’s teen fitness program, Get Up and Go!
Have your students become Current Health Teen Testers! We’re always looking for classes to be in one of our upcoming You Said It! features. E-mail us at currenthealth@weeklyreader.com if you would like your class to take part in an upcoming panel.
Don’t let your students forget: they can ask us any health question at any time for You Asked, our Q&A section. Send questions to currenthealth@weeklyreader.com or write to us at:
