January Poems When Winter Comes When winter comes and snow piles deep Where do animals go to sleep? Squirrel curls up when cold winds howl And shares a tree with hooty owl. Chipmunk and mouse dig holes down deep And curl up for some wintry sleep. Raccoon climbs up in a tall tree Into a hole safe as can be. Skunk cannot climb but he has found A tree hole home close to the ground; Opossum finds a sleeping space In an old log woodsy place. Corn stalks are where rabbit stays Snug and dry on winter days. When winter goes they all will roam Back to cozy summer homes. -Carol Quinn Winter Winter brings us ice and snow And cold and frosty winds that blow. I love to skate on ponds that freeze And watch my breath blow in the breeze! When snowflakes sparkle in the sun, I’m glad that winter has begun! -Shirley C. Granahan Martin Luther King Martin Luther King was a hero Who fought for people’s rights. He wanted African Americans To be treated as fairly as whites. This special man led marches And peaceful protests too. He helped to make lives better; It was something he had to do. Ha had a dream of freedom To make things equal and fair. Now on his birthday we celebrate How he helped people everywhere. -Deborah Garmon
In or Out? The groundhog hides inside his home, Warm and fast asleep. When he wakes, he’ll lift his head And take a tiny peek. If the sky is covered with clouds, Then out the groundhog comes, But if the day is sunny and bright, Back into his hole he runs. -Marie E. Cecchini Coins I have a quarter, A quarter to spend. After I spend it Where will it end? The man at the store Puts it into his drawer. Then gives it as change, To Mrs. Detour. It goes in her purse But comes out again, When she wants to buy A pretty new pen. And so my quarter Keeps going around. Where will it go next? Which city or town? -S. LaBella
