Welcome to READ and Writing's 2008 Student Writing Showcase!
In this special electronic issue (www.weeklyreader.com/showcase), you'll find poetry and short stories penned by student writers. We are extremely proud of all the students who contributed their work. The poetry and stories chosen for our showcase offer connections to new worlds and unlock treasures for eager readers.

Here are a few of the showcase's highlights:

Check out our Student Writing Center, where you can read some of our greatest student submissions.  Then listen to well-known writers (as well as not-so-well-known editors) read the student submissions and offer their commentary. Cynthia Leitich Smith, M.T. Anderson, Karen Cushman, Phyllis Shalant,
Linda Simone, and Will Weaver read our student writing.

In this issue's LSI we take a look at what makes one student's writing so great.  Delve into the inner workings of "Great Aunt Elbert," a poignant short story that offers a fresh take on an ordinary event—dinner with one's family.

Feeling inspired? Then check out our special video version of 1,000 words.  We present two creative short films that will undoubtedly motivate your students to write their own stories and poems.

Also, we present a cool writing exercise called Letter to Self that encourages students to write letters to their future selves. To help your class get started, we've included recordings of two students reading their own "letters to self."

We had a blast putting together this year's Student Writing Showcase. We hope you enjoy it! If you have any comments, questions, concerns, or if you just want to say hello, you can write to us at
read@weeklyreader.com. And don't forget to check out our literary blog, WORD, at www.readandwriting.com

Sincerely,
The Editors of READ Magazine
