An Experiment to Share

Rubber Bones

You have probably been told that drinking milk is good for your bones. Milk contains calcium, which is an important mineral nutrient. Calcium makes bones strong. What might happen if the calcium were taken out of bones? This experiment will show you.

What You Need:

a clean chicken bone

a small bowl or glass

vinegar

What to Do:

1. Put the chicken bone in the empty bowl. Allow it to dry overnight.

2. The next day, take the bone out of the bowl. Try to bend the bone.

3. Place the bone back into the bowl. Cover the bone with vinegar.

4. Allow the bone to soak in the vinegar for three days.

5. After three days, remove the bone and rinse it off.

6. Examine the bone. Try to bend it.

What Happens?

How bendable was the bone at the beginning of the experiment?

How bendable was the bone after it had soaked in vinegar?
