**CORRECTION** Teachers, please note: There was an inadvertent omission from Steven Frank's recipe for The Never Fail Cake. The icing recipe should also contain "one box of confectioners' sugar" in its ingredients list. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope you enjoy the cake!

Happy autumn! We bring you the October issue of Writing.

This month our issue is dedicated to the joy and the challenges of memoir writing. We hope that students will get inspired to look to their own lives for writing inspiration. In the feature article “You, on Paper,” three students share their meaningful experiences with memoir. And professional writers offer tips on getting started. In “Writing to Remember,” columnist Steven Frank shares a poignant memory about his father. There’s more:

  • Students can find look to the stars for advice about writing in “What Kind of Writer Are You? A Cosmic Guide for Writers.”

  • Poet Naomi Shihab Nye answers our questions about why she writes and how poetry can help the world.

  • There is still time to enter the Writing Contest: Treasured Objects. Find details hereEntries must be postmarked by Nov. 12, 2007.

Remember to contact us with your questions and ideas. We’d love to hear from you. You can contact us with your feedback here. Students can blog with us at www.readandwriting.com. Have a great October.

Happy Writing,

The Editors
