Welcome to Career World's

Think back to your first job out of school. Was it the best job ever? Or an okay-for-now job that may have been the first step on a career path for you? Or was it a misstep that ultimately led you down another path? Whatever your first job, there is plenty that can be learned from the experience and applied to one’s future career. “First Rung on the Career Ladder” (page 9) explores this situation and offers examples of professionals whose first jobs did help them up the career ladder they’d planned, and those whose first jobs helped them realize another direction was, in fact, better for them.

As we head into spring, it’s time to start thinking about summer plans. Your students might be interested in our article on career camps (“Camp for Success,” page 26).

We’re in the home stretch! Encourage your students to enter the Career World “What’s Your Career Story?” essay contest. Students are invited to submit profiles of people whose careers they admire—whether it's a famous person or their next-door neighbor. Entries must be postmarked by March 23, 2007. Winners will be announced in April 2007.

To all of our school counselor subscribers, Career World wishes you a happy National School Counseling Week (February 5-9, 2007). Thank you for all you do to help students succeed in school and in their future careers.

We'd love to know what you think of this issue and what you'd like to see in future issues. Please e-mail us with your comments and questions: careerworld@weeklyreader.com. We look forward to hearing from you!
