Mission to Mars

Doing More

After sharing the news update with students, ask: Which side has the better argument: NASA or animal rights groups? Why? Have students give at least two reasons to support their opinions.

NASA has long used animals, such as mice, rats and primates, for space research. The Mercury Program (1959 to 1961) actually put chimpanzees and other monkeys into space before humans were sent. Students might research the history of animal experimentation in NASA and report back to class.
