February/ March Poems

Faraway Stars
At night the sky grows darker
And when it’s very clear
Tiny spots of light come out,
Then stars start to appear.
Stars are different temperatures
And different colors too.
Some are red or yellow
And some look almost blue.
While gazing you may notice
That some stars are real bright.
They may make simple patterns
In the big dark sky at night.
-Deborah Garmon

Whose House Is Best?
Robins live in a cozy nest
Way up in a sturdy tree.
Field mice live in an old stone wall
As safe and snug as can be.
Rabbits live right under the ground
In a burrow, deep and dark.
Small fishes dart and swim along
In their watery home in the park.
Everyone has a special home
That fits their needs, you see.
But frankly, I’m glad my house has walls
And a roof to shelter me.
I like my windows that open out
On our wonderful world so bright;
And best of all, I like my room
And my very own bed at night!
                        -Jean Conder Soule

Maps
A map is a great big picture
That tells you just where you are.
It helps take you where you’re going
When you’re traveling in your car.
A map tells which roads to drive on
And which town that you will pass through.
It helps you to find the streets that you need
And the place that you’re going to.
So next time you’re ready to take a trip
Be ready for where you may roam.
Be sure that you take a map with you
So you will get safely home.
                        -Deborah Garmon

Weather Changes
The weather changes,
So do I,
From cloud to sunburst,
From laugh to cry.
From warmth to coldness,
From low to high,
The weather changes,
So do I.
—Leland B. Jacobs

Vegetable Stew
Vegetable stew,
Vegetable stew,
What do we put
In a vegetable stew?
Potatoes, tomatoes,
And lots of peas too.
Foods that are yummy
And so good for you.
Vegetable stew,
Vegetable stew.
Heat it up! Eat it up!
Vegetable stew!
—Deborah Garmon

Who rode a bus long ago.

Her name was Rosa Parks.

She had the courage to say no.
