
Beginning in January 2006, an independent research and consulting firm conducted a randomized control trial of
Weekly Reader classroom magazines. Over a 16-week period, more than 400 second-grade students, in 22 mainstream second-grade classrooms, participated in the study. The results were significant:
- Students using Weekly Reader learned rare vocabulary and acquired specific nonfiction content, outperforming students who didn't have access to Weekly Reader
- Students using Weekly Reader more frequently read for fun and were read to more often by adults
