Weekly Reader Teacher Resources

January 2006

Dear Educator:

It's that time of year when many of us think about new beginnings and setting goals! Try asking your students what things they might like to try to accomplish. Some may say they want to become better readers. Others might want to draw the very best picture! Whatever students' wishes or goals, your instruction and patience will guide their successes. We at Weekly Reader support the work you do each day by creating products that invite students to read, comprehend, think, and explore—things that help them experience success and the joy of learning.

Weekly Reader wishes you and your students a Happy New Year!

Don't forget to check your inbox for each month's edition of our Teacher's Companion! We'll highlight stories from our current Pre-K–Grade 1 publications and bring you up to date on other Weekly Reader products designed to support your curriculum and engage your students.

Leap into Literacy with this cool tool kit!
This month we use the occasion of Martin Luther King Jr. Day to encourage discussion about what it means to have good character. Children can begin to appreciate the importance of being honest, kind, and fair. Build vocabulary as well as good citizenship awareness by inviting children to choose words that describe their own character.

Please tell us what you think!
Earlier in the school year, you received Weekly Reader's "What's Your Story?" Classroom Activity Kit. As the "What's Your Story?" program grows, we strive to improve it and provide you with the resources and tools you need-including an updated free activity kit.

  • WEEKLY READER IN YOUR CLASSROOM—JANUARY

    PRE-K EDITION
Weekly Reader PreK Edition Hello, Polar Bears! Weekly Reader kicks off the new year with an issue filled with polar bears—playing, swimming, and interacting. Encourage children to make personal connections. Ask them to describe similar activities that they might do with a parent or sibling. Later this month, use the issue about Martin Luther King Jr. to teach his message about getting along. Display the photos showing children getting along in the Big Issue. Then ask how they get along in preschool, in the playground, and at home. Learning to get along with others not only helps build character, but also helps you maintain a friendly preschool environment. A Make-a-Book about rhyming words helps build vocabulary and developing phonemic awareness skills. Teaching about Groundhog Day is a great way to introduce the concept of the four seasons. As children discover what a groundhog does during winter, spring, summer, and fall, ask them what they do during those seasons.

Attention Teachers: Download the Teacher's Guide for more information.

Print out this month's reproducible BLAST! (Balanced Literacy Activities and Skills for Today!). Create a center with a variety of plush animals and word cards with the name of each animal. Then invite children to look at the pictures of animals on the activity sheet, say the animals' names, and draw a line to match the baby with the grown-up. This will reinforce visual discrimination skills and build vocabulary.

Happy New Year! Get children excited about the new year. Write the number 2006 on an easel pad and invite children to repeat it after you. Then encourage them to say the name of each day of the week. Ask them to share specific things that they do on each day. Also featured this month is an issue about Martin Luther King Jr. and his role as a leader. Extend the lesson by inviting children to name the qualities of a leader and people at school that are leaders. List the names of those people and ask children how they know that those people are leaders. Teach children how to stay healthy by discussing the tips in the issue about health and the human body. Introduce and encourage children to learn the names of parts of the body. Use the vivid photos in the Make-a-Book issues to teach children about animals that make their homes underground.

Print out this month's coloring page featuring Zip at a baseball game. Invite children to color the picture. Print out this month's reproducible BLAST! (Balanced Literacy Activities and Skills for Today!) Invite children to practice saying, spelling, and writing the days of the week.

What's the weather? Winter is a season where the weather changes in nearly every place in the world. Use the issue about maps to introduce children to the concept of how the weather changes in different parts of the country. Explain that where you live determines what kind of winter weather you will get. Other topics this month cover the life and message of Martin Luther King Jr. Discuss how students might follow his message of peace by getting along with others, by using words, and by sharing and caring in the classroom community. We hope your students will get excited when they see the issue about dinosaurs. Find out what they know about other kinds of dinosaurs and create a chart of those facts to add to the lesson.

    -----A Notice to First-Grade Teachers-----

The February Week 3 issue of Weekly Reader Edition 1 was designed to be an easy-to-use Presidents' Day flip book about President George Washington and President Abraham Lincoln. Unfortunately, the pages of the issue were not formatted correctly and the book cannot be put together as intended.

We apologize for any inconvenience, and we have now corrected the problem. We will be reprinting the issue and mailing it out to you in advance of Presidents' Day.
