Ask This Month's Celebrity: Alex Horowitz

This month, the adventures of a young superspy hit the big screen in Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker. Alex, 14, leads a pretty dull life. That changes when his uncle disappears. Alex discovers that his uncle was a spy for the British secret intelligence services MI6. The teen then reluctantly embarks on his own spying career to find out what happened to his uncle.

The movie is based on the first book in Anthony Horowitz's best-selling Alex Rider series. Horowitz—who wrote the screenplay for the film—is the author of more than 26 books for young people. In 2000, Stormbreaker, the first book in the Alex Rider series, was published to international acclaim. Alex Rider novels also include Point Blank, Skeleton Key, Eagle Strike, Scorpia, Ark Angel and the forthcoming Snakehead.. The series has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.

"Spy stories were a huge part of my childhood," Horowitz says. "Then I began to think, how could you make a spy story fresh? And, suddenly, one day, it occurred to me that the way to do it was to make him fourteen. I love the idea of Alex being a fish out of water, a teenager in the adult world. It's a very nice age to write about."

Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker opens October 13.
